First 5: Little Library Bag Initiative for Children Starting School in September 2023
To celebrate each child starting school in September and help them navigate this new experience we have put together a gift of a bag of books just for them.
The stories in the books are about starting school, being happy in yourself and making friends. Each bag also contains a new library card and information for parents.
We hope that this small gift will lead each child to a lifelong love of books and reading that can be shared by the whole family.
Visit your local library today to collect your Little Library bag.

First 5: Little Library Bags Initiative for Early Learning and Care Services

Kerry Library is facilitating the second phase of the First 5 Little Library initiative whereby sets of books are being distributed to Early Learning and Care and School-Age Childcare services country wide.
Kerry Library is arranging distribution through its 9 branch libraries. Representatives of the Early Learning and Care and School-Age Childcare services have been invited to visit their local library to collect their book bags. Each bag contains books chosen by librarians and materials developed to support storytelling and reading with children. Information is also provided on the range of services provided by Kerry Library including book lending and online resources.
These reading materials are being made available free of charge to approximately 200,000 children around the country and is a collaboration between the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Local Government Management Agency.
With quality book titles in English and Irish, the focus of this initiative is to support early language and literacy development among children and build strong links between these services and libraries.
It is intended that this second phase of the First 5 Little Library initiative will further encourage membership and use of the library services among early learning and care services and among young children and their families. It will also enhance the ongoing literacy support initiatives across the Kerry library network.
